Sorrento Cooking Class

Originally, we had planned to head straight north to Florence from Amalfi, and spend the next two nights in Florence. However, we liked Sorrento so much that we just had to go back. Unfortunately, we missed the ferry and ended up taking the terrible bus back to Amalfi. Both of us, and every other passenger on the bus, were miserably sick by the time we got to Sorrento. Just to repeat, ad nauseum literally, don't take this bus. It is awful!
Since we went pretty cheap on AirBnB the first time, we splurged a bit on the Hilton Sorrento Palace, with a lovely poolside and view over the city. After the rough morning, we spent the afternoon laying by the beautiful pool, swimming a bit, and just relaxing.
Calvin found us a fun evening event--a local cooking class! So about 5 pm, we took the train a couple of stops east to the town of Meta. We turned out to be the only students, so it was 2-on-2 with the chefs, Gio (Giovanna) and Sacha. They taught us to make their grandmothers’ recipes for Gnocchi alla Sorrentina and tiramisu. Bellisima! Meravigliosa! Deliziosa! Not only did they teach us to cook, but they chatted with us for hours about our trip, their travels around the world, their cooking/teaching business, and other common interests. We truly made two new friends and hope to see them again! If you want to learn from them, either in Meta or online (they do virtual classes too!), look them up at www.foodiesfromsorrento.com.
The Day's Stats
1 bus, 2 trains, 6.8 miles walked, and 2 new friends made!
The Day's Tips
Let us repeat ourselves: for the love of all that is holy, do not take a bus between Amalfi and Sorrento. Save yourself the dry heaves and take the ferry.
The Day's Favorites
Cal: Loved hanging out, sipping espresso and limoncello with Gio and Sacha--we might have stayed for even longer if we didn't have to catch the last train back to our hotel!
Val: The Hilton Sorrento Palace is worth visiting again, as are Gio and Sacha.
