01
We arrived in Rome and headed out for a long walk in the sun to adapt to the new timezone and see some sites.
02
We toured Trajan's Forum and Market, forums built by other emperors, and the Capitoline Museum.

03
A tour of the Vatican Museum, seeing many works of Roman sculpture and paintings by Raphael and Michaelangelo.
04
A full day of visiting St. Peter's Basilica and climbing the duomo, exploring Hadrian's Mausoleum (now Castel Sant Angelo), and seeing the National Museum of Rome and the Diocletian Baths.

06
Outside Rome, near the town of Tivoli, is a lesser-known ruin of ancient Rome--Villa Adriana, or the villa of Emperor Hadrian. The magnificence is still obvious even through the crumbling stone!

07
The National Archeological Museum in Naples has a treasure trove of scultures, mosaics, and frescoes from Herculaneum and Pompeii, and then we got to see the digs of Herculaneum itself!
08
After the flurry of site-seeing in Rome, we slowed down in Sorrento and enjoyed the food and the coastline.

10
The archeological digs of Pompeii were one of the highlights of the trip so far, from the frescoes and mosaics to the discoveries of day-to-day life before Vesuvius exploded.

11
Amalfi was hot and touristy, but we swam in the sea and ate lemon delize to our heart's content.
12
Sorrento was so nice, we went back for another stop and learned how to make delicious gnocchi alla Sorrentina and tiramisu, thanks to Gio and Sacha!

14
Florence to Volterra
A quick overnight in Volterra opened our eyes to this neat Tuscan hilltop town with ancient Etruscan and Roman architecture and a long history of alabaster artwork.

15
Volterra to Riomaggiore
On the way from Volterra to the Cinque Terre, we stopped in Pisa to push the leaning tower a little farther over...
16
Slowing down in Cinque Terre
After a wander through the crowds in Riomaggiore, Manarola, Vernazza, and Monterosso, we got pizza to-go and chilled on the rooftop terrace.

17
Swimming in Riomaggiore
We stayed in the AC most of the day, emerging for a swim in the Mediterranean.
18
Hiking the Cinque Terre
A half-marathon hike through all five of the Cinque Terre towns gave us sunburns and a grand view of the whole coast!

19
Recovering from the hike
In recovery from the big hike, we rested and then enjoyed a fancy meal at Miky in Monterosso.
20
Heading to Asti
We trained from Riomaggiore through Genova to Asti, to stay at the Cascina Desderi agriturismo for two nights.
